Nothing like something contentious:

I don't think software users have the right to call themselves DJS if all they have ever used is laptops:

My definition of a DJ and remember Disc Jockey involves Discs is someone that can use vinyl or CDs in a live situation ,what's your thoughts please

If it sounds good, regardless of equipment, that's the point. Everyone has their favourites. I used to use decks, but I changed to traktor simply to have all my tracks on a hard-disc rather then lugging cases of CDs and vinyl around. I use a midi controller with two platters that gives me the 'hands on feel' that I need.

But na, as I said, I disagree. For all I care someone could use a cassette player... if the people on the dance floor are loving it, that's the main thing.

Going to have to agree with you on this NIVO. It doesn't matter how you get the music to the people, as long as you get the music to the people.

We certainly have the capacity and equipment to do nothing but CD DJing, however its just so much easier to go off of files than finding CDs the whole time. Call me lazy, but I prefer the digital music. Of course I am getting my degree in Computer Science.

Now a day's with today's technology you would be nut's in my book's to carry vinyl like I used to do it.

Just look at Numark's new IDJ2, one Ipod, one mixer and away you go!

as Long as your dance floor's moving I dont think what you use makes a lick a difference.

I can see your point and to a certain degree I'm with you on the a real DJ should have vinyl and 1200's or CDJ's but just cause I learned on those. But at the same time, I use Tracktor Dj studio as a combo with my cd's, it help's to get back up's ready and stuff.

Depends on how you are I think.

in my 2 CD road cases I carry more song's then i ever could with my old ancient gear!

Well i would have to say that i use a software its called sratch live lots of people are using it it hooks up to a box that transfers the digital singnal and you can use vinyl turn tables so you get the best of both worlds meaning you can use your lap top to select your music and see all the bps and all that nice stuff but you got the turn table to get old school with ! very nice set up.
But it all comes down to the crowd and them having a good time!! pleasing the crowd is the #1 concern!

Sorry , but Digital Deejaying is for professional Deejays.
Obviously the main attraction to Digital Deejaying is not having to carry 5 cases of CD's to the gig with you.
But it goes much further than that.
First, you can scratch and beat mix with Digital Software. But you need to know how. How do you learn? Most of us learned by scratching vinyl first!

Second, we have to offer our clients more than the local High School kid who just bought a pair of IPODS and has a downloaded library of a zillion songs.

Our talent as Deejays is projected as we ENTERTAIN the guests at the gigs withour experience, music depth, and mixin capabilities.

The DIGITAL factor is simply the next step in the evolution of music reproduction and presentation.

I started Deejaying with 33 1/3 's, 45's and even a dozen or so 78's.
The next evolution was Digital Tape, then CD.

Well, here we are, The Digital Deejay evolution, and it is all good!
We can now offer our clients nearly instant requests, offer a music library depth that wasn't feasable to carry with us a few years ago, and custom beat matched mixes like you have never been able to do before!

Wait until you work with features such as PITCH BEND. WOW! It's fantastic. And you can scratch as well!

There is nothing wrong with being a Vinyl Deejay.
There is nothing wrong with being a Digital Deejay either.

The only thing to be careful about with the digital format is the quality of the ripped music. Make sure that it is at a high bit rate or it can sound crappy on a major club system.

The nice thing about Vinyl is that it does have that deep chunky sound full of bass goodness. Digital, no matter how high of a quality can sound tinny so watch your levels! I play with the Rane Serato now which is a nice blend between the two.

Traktor seems a little ghetto since the scratches sound cheesy and real beat juggling is not too easy. Just my opinion.

Word.

You are absolutely correct.
It is imperative that your ripped music files be of a high bit rate.
Many deejays opt for 192K rate, I use 224 and have no problems.
You can go as high as 320K, but it really is not necessary.

It is equally important to resist downloading music files off the internet P2P networks.

DJ music is now more affordable than ever from the subscription services, as little as $20 a month. So buy your music and then rip your purchased CD's.

Personally I consider Digital DJ'ing to be more leaning towards the Live Performance that you would get from a Dance Band ( ie. 20-20 Sound System), than traditional DJ'ing, as it incorporates a lot of the artists own loops, keys and recordings.

I'm guessing that it could still be classed as an evolved version of DJ'ing, but really I see it as an alternative. I enjoy both though, the contrast between the two styles is really healthy for the Music Scene.

I don't believe there's anything wrong with being well rounded being both old school and new school. It would be and is beneficial.
It's about pleasing the crowd, pumping out some good music and of course not train wrecking. :es
